Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between mindfulness, suicidal ideation, thought suppression and avoidance coping style in older adults. Participants included 230 individuals over the age of 60: 71 men and 159 women. This study utilized the following psychological instruments: Mindfulness Scale developed by Park Sung Hyun(2006), White Bear Suppression Inventory, Avoidance Coping Style Scale and Suicide Ideation Scale. Results are as follows: First, suicidal ideation had a significant negative correlation with mindfulness and significant positive correlations with both thought suppression and avoidance coping style. Second, thought suppression and avoidance coping style partially mediated the relationship between mindfulness and suicidal ideation, thus confirming the mediating effects of thought suppression and avoidance coping style as predictors of suicide risk in older adults. Implications and limitations of this study are discussed, and suggestions for future studies are presented.
